Anatomy of the Toes
There are 14 bones that work in conjunction to form the toes. Each of these toes contains three phalanges (proximal, middle, and distal), while the big toe contains only two phalangeal bones
(proximal and distal). The toes of the foot have very strong ligaments providing the support and stability that is necessary for such a small region of the body while also providing the adequate amount of mobility that is required of the toes for every day functions such as walking.
