Tongue Anatomy

Anatomy of the Tongue
The tongue is a highly versatile structure composed primarily of muscles and is responsible for our sense of taste and for aiding in the chewing process.  The muscular organ of the tongue coordinates movement to allow it to move food around the mouth in readiness to forward this food to the digestive organs.  In addition to the inner layers of muscle that help comprise the tongue, its upper outer surface is covered with tiny projections called papillae, some of which contain taste buds.
