The hip joint is one of the true ball-and-socket joints located in the human body.  With the joint being structured this way, it allows for the motion needed for standard activities such as walking, running, or climbing.  The hip joint consists of multiple layers: the deepest is the joint and bone, the next layer is made up of the ligaments, and the outermost layer is comprised of muscles and tendons.
