Overview
The hip region contains powerful muscles, including the largest muscle in the entire body, the gluteus maximus. The gluteus maximus is the muscle that gives the buttocks its familiar and recognizable shape. This muscle of the buttocks extends the thigh, while other muscles in the buttocks such as the gluteus medius and minimus, work to keep the
pelvis
level and swing the opposite side forward while walking.
