Anatomy of the Calf Muscles
The term
“calf muscles”
is often used in reference of the gastrocnemius and soleus. These muscles allow for simple functions such as the lowering of the foot at the
ankle joint
, which is also known as plantar flexion. There are also some smaller muscles located in the lower portion of the posterior region of the lower leg, including: the flexor halluces longus, flexor digitorum longus, tibialis posterior, and popliteus. These muscles are what enable the foot to push off of the ground.
