Colon Anatomy

The colon is the largest component of the large intestine and is divided up into several regions; the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon.    The function of the colon is to absorb water and bile salts remaining in digested material, and pass the remainder to the rectum, as feces.  The colon extends from the small intestine to the rectum.
