The pancreas is shaped like a pennant and is located behind the stomach, with its head nestled in the curve of the duodenum, and its tail meeting with the spleen. The pancreas is a vital organ with both the digestive and endocrine systems. Within the digestive system, the exocrine cells of the pancreas act on fats, proteins, and starches, breaking down these substances into smaller particles. Within the endocrine system, the pancreas sees the production of its hormones by select cells in the pancreatic structure, grouped together in clusters, called the islets of Langerhans. It is also important to note that the endocrine function of the pancreas is to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
